White House expected to announce $100 billion investment by Taiwan chipmaker this afternoon

The White House on Monday is going to be announcing that a chipmaker from Taiwan is making the largest direct investment in US history — “over $100 billion dollars,” per a senior White House official.

President Donald Trump will make the announcement at 1:30 pm ET in the Roosevelt Room.

The chairman and chief executive of Taiwanese chipmaking giant Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, C.C. Wei, is set to meet with Trump on Monday, the company confirmed to CNN.

The meeting comes as the White House said on Monday that a chipmaker from Taiwan for an investment announcement.

More context: The White House did not name the company expected to make the announcement, and a TSMC spokesperson declined to comment on any possible forthcoming announcement.

But TSMC is the largest and most prominent semiconductor manufacturer in Taiwan – and the world – and its chips power countless tech products, from cars to iPhones.

TSMC has invested in growing its manufacturing capacity in the United States in recent years, including a new Arizona factory that began producing chips for Apple in January.
