Hamas, Israel confirm their ground forces clashed in Gaza on Sunday

Hamas fighters engaged with Israeli forces who infiltrated the Gaza Strip on Sunday, according to the Palestinian group’s armed wing Qassam Brigades.

The group said the infiltration took place east of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza region.

“Fighters engaged with the infiltrating force, destroying two bulldozers and a tank and forced the force to withdraw, before they returned safely to base,” the statement said.

The Israeli army has also confirmed one soldier was killed and three injured in the raid into Gaza on Sunday, adding that the aim was to locate captives held by Hamas.

Israel’s military described the raids as limited.

Military spokesperson Daniel Hagari said the raids focused on eliminating groups of “terrorists who were preparing for the next stage of the war”.

Hagari added that the operation aimed to gather intelligence about captives now totalling at least 222, according to Israel.

Israel’s army confirmed one soldier was killed and three injured during one of the raids.

Hamas said its fighters encountered an Israeli armored unit entering the southern Gaza.

The group said the infiltration took place east of Khan Younis.

It added that its fighters destroyed some Israeli military equipment.

Israeli-American IDF soldier from Maryland killed in missile attack near Lebanon border

Omer Balva, 22, died Friday at the northern border of Israel, killed by anti-tank missile fire while serving in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), according to a statement from the IDF.

The Israeli-American dual citizen from Rockville was called to duty to serve in the IDF just last week, according to a statement from the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington.

“Omer was an unabashed advocate for the State of Israel,” a statement from Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School where Balva recently graduated from reads. “He was a beloved student who attended CESJDS from age seven through his high school graduation.”

Balva was a staff sergeant reservist in the Artillery Corps, according to the IDF. He was one of the more than 300,000 reservists called up after the Hamas attacks earlier this month.
