Amid Israel denial, many recall Israeli response to killing of Abu Akleh

Many observers have highlighted parallels between Israel’s denial of the bombing of the al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza and its response to the killing Al-Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh last year.

After Israeli forces fatally shot Abu Akleh in May 2022, Israeli officials denied involvement in the incident and tried to blame it on armed Palestinians.

The office of then-Prime Minister Naftali Bennett released a video showing a Palestinian firing a weapon down an alleyway, claiming that the footage backed their theory.

“According to the information we have gathered, it appears likely that armed Palestinians — who were firing indiscriminately at the time — were responsible for the unfortunate death of the journalist,” the prime minister’s office said at that time.

The accompanying video was quickly debunked. Israel eventually admitted that one of its soldiers killed Abu Akleh but said the shooting was not intentional.




Israeli officials have ordered hospital evacuations, called for collective punishment of Gaza
Despite Israel’s denial that it does not target civilians or medical facilities after the bombing of the al-Ahli hospital, the country’s leaders have been suggesting that they are collectively punishing Palestinians in Gaza.

“I have ordered a complete siege on the Gaza Strip. There will be no electricity, no food, no fuel, everything is closed,” Defence Minister Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said early in the war. “We are fighting human animals.”

A day before the hospital bombing, Netanyahu said in a speech that the war was a struggle between “the children of light and the children of darkness”. His office reiterated that statement in now-deleted social media posts.

Moreover, Israel has ordered several hospitals in Gaza to evacuate, drawing condemnations from several medical and rights groups, including Doctors Without Borders (MSF).

Earlier this week, Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir said if Hamas does not release the captives it is holding, the only things that should be entering Gaza “are hundreds of tons of explosives from the Air Force, not an ounce of humanitarian aid”.

巴國現在就極力切割哈瑪斯，我是覺得，可以把加薩居民移去巴國領土，加薩交給以國管理，不然這樣分兩邊以國也很頭疼

Hananya Naftali’s social media posts have been circulating online as Israel bombed al-Ahli hospital in Gaza.

“Israeli Air Force struck a Hamas terrorest base inside a hospital in Gaza,” Naftali wrote on X. But as the death toll mounted, he quickly deleted his post.

He later said he “mistakenly” shared a Reuters report that said Israel was behind the attack, but the news agency never reported that a Hamas base was struck.

Naftali has been a rising influencer in social media circles supportive of Israel with 357,000 followers on X alone. For the past few years, he has been working as part of Netanyahu’s digital team as well.

He often defends Israeli conduct with headlines like, “Palestinians never cared about Shireen Abu Akleh”.

Naftali started gaining fame after the 2014 Gaza war, where he served in the army, and shared online content backing Israel.
